Yang Lian Hui, AKA Ik Yang, has been one of the very few Chinese fighters that has managed to earn admiration from American fans journalists. That's not to say he's China's first international boxing star but many fans who have seen him do admire his style and skill which have been compared favourably to American fighters. Surprisingly however Yang wasn't a product of the Chinese system but instead he was developed in South Korea. It was in South Korea that Yang won his first ever professional boxing title, the South Korean Lightweight title. Yang won that belt in May 2012 when he took on the more experienced Jong Won Won and proved himself as one of the best fighters in South Korea by dominating Won with a stylish and aggressive performance. Of course the Chinese fighter wasn't flawless but he showed the traits that have made him him so popular and have helped him become a staple of Top Rank's Macau shows. Sadly for Korean fans this was the Yang's penultimate fight in Korea as the allure of boxing in the US and now Macau seem to have been too much for him to resist, especially when you consider the fact that the Korean scene is currently crumbling. In regards to the quality of the video, we are sorry it's not in HD, the video was very difficult to hunt down but we felt, even in this quality, that it was worth posting given that Yang now seems to be on the verge of becoming a major star.

In the Western Hemisphere we do tend to feel that Chinese boxing revolves around Zou Shiming and whether you like that or not he does get a lot of the headlines. Thankfully what he also does it brings attention to some other boxers from either the Chinese mainland or the Special Administrative Regions such as Rex Tso and Kuok Kun Ng, both of whom we do like watching. One other man who is getting a lot of attention and opportunities courtesy of Shiming is IK Yang, AKA Yang Lian Hui. Yang is a man with a TV friendly style that seems different to many Chinese boxers, he seems to have skills but also the heart and mentality of a fighter. He's flash when he wants to be but serious when he needs to be. Part of that warrior mentality will be his Chinese roots though another part will be due to where he started his boxing career. South Korea. What we have in this video is one of Yang's very early fights, in fact it's his 4th fight which took place in Eumsonggun back in December 2007 and saw Yang stepping up for his first 8 rounder and taking on Chang Il Kim, who would later fight for the South Korean Light Welterweight title. Amazingly Yang had only been a professional for just 6 months going in to this bout yet was already competing in 8 round bouts and showing the skills that he can rely on when he needs to. When we talk about Chinese fighters we tend to automatically think of Zou Shiming as the figurehead maybe followed by former world champion Xiong Zhao Zhong and rising star Rex Tso. For the hardcore fans out there their is another name worth making a very serious note of, IK Yang, or rather Yang Lian Hui. Yang is a fighter who has got a more fan friendly style than Shiming and a more refined style than Tso, admittedly that's not saying a lot, and has also got a small, but growing, following with Top Rank featuring him on a number of their Macau shows. Whilst Yang is known to the hardcore what few will actually know is that he started his career in South Korea. It was in Korea that he fought his first 7 professional contests and has fought 9 of his 16 professional bouts including this bout with little known Korean Sang-Hyun Shin way back in August 2008. Going in to the bout Shin was 2-4 and very little known, even to Korean fans. Yang on the other hand was 5-0 and viewed as a talented fighter with a lot of potential. This fight saw Yang's potential tested and, as with many fights involving South Koreans, it was actioned packed. We would like to thank Nova Boxing for this bout, their collection of Korean fights really is amazing thought you need to dig deep to find the hidden gems. |
