November 9th 1969-Nihon University Auditorium, Tokyo, Japan Hiroshi Kobayashi (56-8-3, 10) vs Carlos Ruben Canete (75-4-7, 52) In 1969 the then WBA Super Featherweight champion Hiroshi Kobayashi battled against the heavy handed Argentinian challenger Carlos Ruben Canete. December 3rd 1970-Nihon University Auditorium, Tokyo, Japan Hiroshi Kobayashi (59-8-4, 10) vs Shozo Saijo (27-5-2, 8) A few years ago we saw a small surge in world title bouts being fought at a catchweight. Interestingly in December 1970 we saw a catchweight bout between two world champions, with both men fighting above their championship weight. That bout saw then then WBA Super Featherweight champion Hiroshi Kobayashi take on WBA Featherweight champion Shozo Saijo in a 10 round contest above the Super Featherweight limit. Notable both men would return to their championship weight the following year, and defend their respective titles in early part of the year! August 23rd 1970-Korakuen Hall, Tokyo, Japan Hiroshi Kobayashi (58-8-4, 10) vs Antonio Amaya (34-4-3, 7) II In 1970 Japan's popular Hiroshi Kobayashi, the then WBA Super Featherweight champion, had his second bout with Panama's Antonio Amaya, and this was a bit of a blood bath! April 6th 1969-Kokugikan, Tokyo, Japan Hiroshi Kobayashi (54-8-3, 9) vs Antonio Amaya (30-3-3, 7) I In 1969 Japanese world champion Hiroshi Kobayashi, the then WBA Super Featherweight champion, faced off with Panamanian challenger Antonio Amaya in the first of two bouts between the two men, who would have a rematch the following year. October 26th 1971-Gimnasio Nuevo Panama, Panama City, Panama Hiroshi Kobayashi (61-9-4, 10) vs Roberto Duran (25-0, 22) In 1971 former Japanese world champion Hiroshi Kobayashi travelled to Panama to face rising star Roberto Duran, a future boxing icon and a truly legendary fighter December 14th 1967-Kokugikan, Tokyo, Japan Hiroshi Kobayashi (50-6-2, 7) vs Yoshiaki Numata (33-4, 9) In 1967 Super Featherweight champion Hiroshi Kobayashi [小林弘] battled compatriot Yoshiaki Numata [沼田義明] in a bout for both the WBC and WBA titles, both held by Kobayashi coming into this bout. October 5th 1968-Nippon Budokan, Tokyo, Japan Hiroshi Kobayashi (52-8-3, 9) vs Jaime Valladares (57-3-10, 32) II In 1968 the WBA/WBC Super Featherweight champion Hiroshi Kobayashi took on Jaime Valladares, in what was the second bout between the two men. In their first bout the men fought to a draw in Valladares' home of Ecuador. |
