June 14th 1987-Hawaii Hotel, Bukok, South Korea Kyung Yung Lee (10-0, 3) vs Masaharu Kawakami (0-0)* In the summer of 1987 we had the first ever IBF Minimumweight title bout, which was held in South Korea and saw the unbeaten Kyung Yung Lee [이경연] battle Japanese debutant Masaharu Kawakami in Bukok. *This bout took place back before the JBC recognised the IBF, and on screen graphics suggest Kawakami had fought professionally before this bout, however no record is clearly given. The records kept of IBF Japan fighters is sketchy at best, and he may well have had several "unofficial" bouts prior to this one or it may be that those in Korea fabricated or embellished his record. |
