November 30th 2011-Challenge Stadium, Mt Claremont, Western Australia, Australia Chris John (45-0-2, 22) Vs Stas Merdov (32-7, 24) Indonesian legend Chris John fought a number of bouts outside of his homeland, including 3 in Australia. The second of those Australian bouts saw "The Dragon" face Stas Merdov. February 28th 2009-Toyota Center, Houston, Texas, USA Chris John (42-0-1, 22) Vs Rocky Juarez (28-4, 20) Indonesian fighter Chris John was a well travelled fighter, despite the myth that he was a stay at home champion. During his career he fought in Indonesia, Japan, Australia, Singapore and the USA. Here we have his US debut against multi-time challenger Rocky Juarez. March 4th 2006-Karang Melenu Sports Hall, Tenggarong, Kutai Kartanegara, Indonesia Chris John (36-0-1, 20) Vs Juan Manuel Marquez (44-2-1, 33) Indonesia's Chris John is a man that man fans over-look despite the fact he has a number of solid wins, the most notable of which came against Mexican great Juan Manuel Marquez in 2006. April 14th 2013- Indoor Tennis Stadium, Jakarta, Indonesia Chris John (48-0-2, 22) Vs Satoshi Hosono (23-2, 17) When it comes to fighters who have split opinion over the last few decades it's fair to say that Chris John is one of the most decisive. For some John was a cherry picking home town hero who never traveled and was happy to hold a title hostage, for others he was a national hero and major sporting star for Indonesia. The truth probably lies between the two views and he did travel, a lot more than people seem to realise, and he also took on numerous tough challenges. One of the toughest was Japanese banger Satoshi Hosono who had twice come up short in previous world title bouts, but was genuinely world class. Unbeaten records are funny. They are just numbers and at the end of the day they actually tell us very, very little about the fighter. A fighter can be 30-0 and little more than an untested hype with limited skills and clever match making or they can be 2-1 and a world champion with such exceptional talent that their promoter has allowed them to be rushed to the top. One battle between unbeaten from just a few years ago saw one fighter, Chris John, sporting a spectacular record of 47-0-2 (22) whilst his opponent, Chonlatarn Piriyapinyo, was a similarly impressive 44-0 (27). Between them the men had gone 93 fights unbeaten but at the end of the bout one man was clearly the better fighter and proved that he was more talented than his foe. We won't say much more about this bout but we will add that in less than 2 weeks Chonlatarn, now 52-1 (33), will be battling a 2-1 (1) world champion in what looks like a very tough bout for the Thai despite his clear edge in professional experience. It's fair to say that Chris John was never known for his wars. He was an excellent fighter though, barring one or two examples, he fought as a boxer as opposed to a brawler. One of those exceptions was his fantastic bout with Japanese fighter Hiroyuki Enoki, a bout that deserved to be called a "war" with both men throwing serious leather at the other and both having the scars of war at the end of the bout. It truly was a great bout that combined plenty of skills, lots of action and real heart from both men. If you've not seen this one before we really recommend you give it a watch it a watch, it may help change your view on Chris John who really could go to war when he needed to. |
