August 28th 2015-Bangkok, Thailand Pigmy Kokietgym (57-7-2, 23) v Jaysever Abcede (9-3, 5) Regularly when a fighter travels to Thailand they are doing so for a payment to lose against a local fighter. In recent times however we've been seeing fighters travel with then intention of upsetting the applecart, as seen recently when Jestoni Autida over-came Ratchasak KKP. This week we saw another Filipino with the intention of being more than just the "deisignated loser". This time it was Jaysever Abcede who traveled to face former world title challenger Pigmy Kokietgym, a man who had been all but promised another world title shot later this year. (Video courtesy of tko.in.th) August 28th 2015- Thailand Paipharob Kokietgym (29-0, 22) Vs Fanther Ndahiuw (7-3-1, 3) Highly ranked Thai Light Flyweight Paipharob Kokietgym has set his sights on a world title fight. Whilst he's waiting he's kept busy and recently faced Fanther Ndahiuw in a bout for a WBO regional title. (Video courtesy of tko.in.th) February 7th 1990-Korakuen Hall, Tokyo, Japan Jum Hwan Choi (20-2, 8) Vs Hideyuki Ohashi (12-3, 8) Today Hideyuki Ohashi is known as the chairman of the very successful Ohashi gym, a gym that controls the careers of fighters like Naoya Inoue and Akira Yaegashi. Back in the 80's and 90's however he was a world class fighter himself. This bout sees Ohashi challenging Korean fighter Jum Hwan Choi, the WBC Minimumweight champion. July 25th 2015-Palms Casino and Resort, Pearl Theater, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA Beibut Shumenov (15-2, 10) Vs BJ Flores (31-1-1, 20) Kazakh fighter Beibut Shumenov may not be the best fighter on the planet but he's been relatively happy to test himself. Earlier this year we saw him face BJ Flores in a bout for the WBA interim Cruiserweight. We won't lie and say this was a thrilling bout, but it was great to see how improved Shumenov was compared to the fighter he was just a few fights back. May 9th 2015-State Farm Arena, Hidalgo, Texas, USA Tomoki Kameda (31-0, 19) Vs Jamie McDonnell (25-2-1, 12) The Bantamweight division has been one of the most interesing this year, and one of the division's best bouts was between Japan's Tomoki Kameda and Englishman Jamie McDonnell. For those who missed this one we've included the video below, whilst getting excited about their upcoming rematch. January 29th 2006-Kyuden Gym, Fukuoka, Fukuoka, Japan In Jin Chi (30-2, 18) Vs Takashi Koshimoto (38-1-2, 17) South Korean fight In Jin Chi is the last Korean fighter who really proved himself on the world stage. The multi-time world champion came to prominence following bouts with Erik Morales and Michael Brodie though continued to fight at the top tier until his retirement in 2006. One of his final bouts saw him travel to Japan to defend his title again Takashi Koshimoto. August 14th 2010-Laredo Energy Arena, Laredo, Texas, USA Ji Hoon Kim (21-5, 18) Vs Miguel Vazquez (25-3, 12) Recently we've seen Min Wook Kim begin to base himself in the west as he's tried to become the latest Korean star. Prior to him we need to go back to Ji Hoon Kim for the last Korean to really make an impact in the west. Kim, a typical Korean Brawler, is best known by some for his IBF Lightweight title fight against talented Mexican Miguel Vazquez. Sadly for Kim this was to be the beginning of the end an eye injury first suffered here eventually forced his retirement with it becoming a recurring issue of the following years. April 16th 2005-Nippon Budokan, Tokyo, Japan Yutaka Niida (17-1-3, 8) Vs Jae-Won Kim (19-1-2, 6) The Minimumweight division has been one of the sports most over-looked in recent years despite having had some great fights and fantastic fighters. One of the more under-rated fighters was Yutaka Niida who really was a fantastic boxer at the turn of the millennium. In this bout we see Niida take on aggressive Korean Jae-Won Kim in a "boxer Vs Pressure fighter" contest. November 12th 1989- World Trade Center, Seoul, South Korea Napa Kiatwanchai (10-0-1, 5) Vs Jum Hwan Choi (19-2, 7) Back in the late 1980's South Korea was one of boxing's most important countries with numerous top tier fighters across a number of divisions. One of the top Korean's at the time was Jum Hwan Choi, a former Light Flyweight champion. Following the loss of his Light Flyweight title Choi dropped to Minimumweight and challenged unbeaten WBC champion Napa Kiatwanchai, of Thailand. This up and down bout saw numerous knockdowns and a lot of action. |
