In the only Asian card of the day Thai fans either in attendance at the Chiranakorn Stadium, Songkhla or watching on Thailand 3 were treat to a relatively interesting card which was headlined by a bout between Thai Petchbarngborn Kokietgym (20-6-1, 8) and Filipino Michael Escobia (10-4-1, 2) for the PABA Flyweight title.
Prior to the main event fans were treat to 3 bouts, though admittedly at a low level. They included a victory for 29 old debutant Saiyok Poompanmuang (1-0, 1) who, prior to his professional boxing debut had competed in over 240 kick boxing contests (winning more than 200). Saiyok's boxing debut, scheduled for 6 rounds, lasted only 2 as he blasted out Muhammad Sapata (0-1) who was also making his debut.
The card also included decision victories for Yokthong Kokietgym (13-2, 10) and Samartlek Chaiyonggym (12-4, 4). Both of those decisions came over the 6 round distance. Interestingly this saw Samartlek moving up a weight from his previous bout having claimed the PABA interim Minimumweight just a month ago. For the 18 year old Yokthong this was his 5th straight win since being stopped by current Japanese Minimumweight champion Ryuji Hara a little over a year ago.
In the main event of the evening Petchbarngborn Kokietgym dropped down from Super Flyweight, where he had previously held the PABA interim and the WBC Asia Council Continental titles to Flyweight and claimed a 12 round decision to capture the PABA Flyweight title. Although Petchbarngborn was forced to go 12 rounds for just the 3rd time in his career he managed to out point Michael "Explosive" Escobia, who himself went 12 for the first time.
Although relatively unheralded the 27 year old Petchbarngborn did run current WBA Super Flyweight champion Kohei Kono very close just 7 months ago and following this result he may well be looking for a rematch with Kono (who defends his world title on
