A lot of music we stumble on isn't recorded in a high level studio, and that can give the music we end up including in this weekly series a raw feel. That's certainly the case here with a track dedicated to Kohei Kono recorded by SAYTOU. From what we understand the song is called "Flower You've Bloomed", although it could have been lost in translation. Whilst the title might not have been translated perfectly it's clearly referring to how Kono got better when he matured as a fighter. His scrappy early career results and set backs were put behind him as he bloomed into a 2-time world champion. The track is a simple acoustic track, and a real strange one, but despite being very amateurish, and essentially just a demo, it's still an interesting find and something we felt was worth sharing. Kono, who we did feature in a music video a few months back, is often a forgotten man so it is nice to see someone singing a dedication to him, even if the song is in such a raw demo-like state.

For a third week running we've ended up stumbling on something related to Yoko Gushiken as we share "Gushiken's Theme" by the 10 Count band. The track is a funky one that seems to be well suited to the time of Gushiken's career, but maybe not the most aggressive or tough sounding song. This is fun, it's very much a retro, funk, track and something we're glad we stumbled on, even if it is just a touch more fun than fighting. Given the name of the band, and how professional this sounds, we were surprised that very little information seems to be available about the group. A real shame as they sound like they could be worth a listen for more than just this one song. The internet is a wonderfully diverse place and today we get to share something that there's no chance we would have found without the wonders of the internet. This is a live performance by a man we believe to be called Kuniba Choei, though his name may be mistranslated and if it we're sorry. The song he's performing is a track called "Eternal Champion". Despite "Eternal Champion" being a nickname for Masao Oba in Japan this song is actually dedicated to Yoko Gushiken, and was performed in Okinawa, the place where Gushiken is from. It's a bit of an oddity, and yet is well worthy of a listen, even if it is just a single listen. It's rare to see an international parody but that's what we have here with Daichi aka DUCK parodying "Gucci Gang" by Lil Pump to make the song into "Gushiken", about Yoko Gushiken. The genius behind this can't be denied and whilst it's maybe not the most original or musically amazing song real credit needs to go out to DUCK for reworking an English Language rap song into a Japanese song about Gushiken. Not only does it work as a rap song but it's also relevant to Gushiken and his career, with a number of references to the fighter. Absolute genius! We're back to more Gennady Golovkin inspired music thanks to Larry Coyote who recorded "No Mas GGG" in the build up to Golovkin's fight with David Lemieux. The song is probably our least favourite of the recent Golovkin inspired songs but it's another track that's an easy enough to listen to Rap track. Nothing special, but certainly nothing to complain about here. After recently including a number of American rap songs about a Kazakh great we're taking a real left turn this week as we look at an instrumental piece that was recorded by Igor Volenko for Ruslan Chagaev. The track, which appears to simply be named "Walk-In Song Chagaev", original huh! Was used by the Uzbek Heavyweight who has recorded training videos with it, as with this one from the official Chagaev youtube channel. A bit of an oddity, but a perfect example of what we were looking for when we started to include weekly boxing related music in this section. We once again turn to talented duo Mario Ruiz & Omar Cruz for our song of the week, as they again do a track based on the man who seems to be their favourite fighter, Gennady Golovkin. This track, which appears to have been recorded prior to, or around the time of, the David Lemieux fight, is "God of War" and heavily samples from White Stripes song "Seven Nation Army", a track that Golovkin often used as a walk out song. The sample gives us a clear sense of familiarity whilst the rapping of Ruiz and Cruz, which we're getting familiar with in recent weeks, is growing on us. For a second week running we turn to rapping duo Mario Ruiz and Omar Cruz for a song regarding, and music video featuring, Gennady Golovkin. Last week it was "Mexican Style" and this time around it's "Good Boy Killa", as the duo build a song around one of of Golovkin's many catchphrases. We'll be honest and admit that we prefer "Mexican Style" but this is certainly not a bad track, and you can tell from this, and the other song, that two musicians behind it are legitimately fans of Golovkin. One of the most important fighters in recent years has been Gennady Golovkin, who has put Central Asian boxing on the map, in a huge way. The hard hitting Kazakh Middleweight was a big draw and a major force at 160lbs for a decade or so and a hugely successful amateur. His success and charisma has lead to a number of songs being recorded about him, including "Mexican Style" by Mario Ruiz and Omar Cruz. Not only is the song about Golovkin, but it also features "GGG" in the music video. A simple but effective song and video for one of the stars of the 2010's. When we discuss the most impressive natural talents to come out of the Philippines in recent years we need to state that Marvin Sonsona was a very special fighter. Sadly for Sonsona he lacked the commitment to make the most of that ability. Although Sonsona failed to do what he had the ability to do he did manage to inspire Mike Swift & J-Hon to record a song dedicated to him, "Marvelous Marvin Sonsona". The song isn't amazing, but it's certainly not terrible and is worth a listen. Sadly this just makes us think of what a wasted talent Sonsona really was. He was marvelous, but he really should have done so much more. |
