Earlier this month we reported that Chinese banger Zhang Junglong (12-0, 12)* [张君龙] would be returning to the ring in April to fight in a WBA regional title fight, down in the south of China in Xishuangbanna. Over the past week we have been in touch with Zhang's international manager, Alexan Manvelyan, who has informed us of Zhang's upcoming opponent.
We now know that Zhang's April 11th bout will see the Chinese puncher take on well travelled Brazilian George Arias (56-15, 42).
Aged 41 is a veteran of the sport and although he is getting old and has been racking up losses he is a notable test for Junlong and a chance to genuinely impress.
Arias comes into the bout on the back of 3 straight losses, and 4 losses in his last 5, though they have all come to highly regarded fighters in the form of Denis Boytsov, Hughie Fury, Kubrat Pulev and Carlos Takam, all of which have been by decision. In fact no one has stopped Arias since 2005 when Juan Carlos Gomez stopped him in 4 rounds. Following that loss Arias has fought not only the men previously mentioned but also went the distance with Sinan Samil Sam, Taras Bidenko and Audley Harrison, in fact he gave Harrison a very close and competitive bout.
The bout may not be a world class test for the Chinese fighter however if he can continue his stoppage run and take out Arias it'd be an impressive result.
We also now know that Junglong will be back in the ring later in the year in an IBF regional title bout, if he beats Arias. Though details on that bout aren't yet available.
*Junlong's record is disputed with at least 2 other record being reported for him.
