Earlier today Japanese channel WOWOW hosted a special event to help build up interest in the upcoming Welterweight showdown between Manny Pacquiao(57-5-2, 38) and Floyd Mayweather Jr (47-0, 26). The event featured a number of high profile members of the Japanese boxing community with some giving their views on the up coming bout whilst others were featured a couple of exhibition bouts.
Among those to give their view on the "Fight of the Century" were unbeaten world champion Shinsuke Yamanaka (23-0-2, 17) and Naoya Inoue (8-0, 7) who had a chat session hosted by former world champion Toshiaki Nishioka. Not only did they give their views on the upcoming bout but also a potential showdown between the two men, with both suggesting it was unlikely for the time being considering they were in different weights, though neither ruled it out for the future.
When it came to the big fight both men favoured Mayweather to take a decision over the Filipino icon. As for Nishioka he made a gutsy call of Pacquiao to win with a 6th round KO.
In regards to the exhibitions the fans got a genuine treat with two 3 round sessions.
One of those "bouts" saw Japanese Featherweight champion Satoshi Hosono (7-2-1, 20) share the ring with former Japanese Super Featherweight champion Daiki Kaneko (21-4-3, 14) whilst the other was a highly competitive contest between WBO #1 ranked Bantamweight contender Ryo Akaho (26-1-2, 18) and the highly regarded Ryo Matsumoto (14-0, 12), both of whom are rumoured to be getting world title fights later in the year.
Whilst the exhibitions were a bit of fun for the fans they may well have planted the seeds for a possible Matsumoto Vs Akaho bout either later this year or next year and we doubt many fans would be complaining if that one comes off down the line.
