The Watanabe gym is currently flying high with a trio of world champions. They are, of course, WBA Super Featherweight "Super" champion Takashi Uchiyama (24-0-1, 20) [内山高志], WBA Super Flyweight champion Kohei Kono (31-8-1, 13) [河野公平] and WBA Light Flyweight champion Ryoichi Taguchi (23-2-1, 10) [田口良一].
Today those three champions paid a courtesy visit to the Shingawa offices to see local mayor Takeshi Hamano.
The meeting saw the three champions talking to the mayor about their plans for the coming year and it seems that those plans are looking promising.
From comments made by Uchiyama it does appear that the much talked about contest with Nicholas Walters (26-0-1, 21) is close to being finalised. The suspicion is that the bout is set to be announced for the Manny Pacquiao Vs Timothy Bradley III under-card.
Comments made from the Watanabe chairman also pointed to progress being made in another much talked about contest, a bout between Kono and Hong Kong's Rex Tso (18-0, 11) [曹星如]. It seems like the plan, at least from the Watanabe team, is to secure the bout for Shanghai in March. It looks like plans to have the bout in Macau or Hong Kong have been put on the back burner with Shanghai becoming the focus.
As for Taguchi the plan is to defend in Japan in April or May.
