Earlier today fight fans at the Mielparque Hall in Osaka city saw an intriguing WBC Youth Featherweight title bout as the unbeaten Takuya Uehara (11-0, 6) [上原 拓哉] took on Filipino foe Markquil Salvana (11-3, 5), and took a hotly contested decision win to claim the title.
The bout was an exciting contest from the early stages with Uehara making the most of his jab and claiming the first round on all 3 cards as well as the 3rd round, with Salvana fighting back hard in rounds 2 and 4 to impress a pair oif the judges. After 4 rounds one judge had the local favourite in a commanding 40-36 lead whilst the other judges had the bout even at 38-38.
Salvana's spirited effort continued in round 5 though unfortunate a good 6th for Uehara was followed by a hugely significant round 7, a round which saw Salvana suffer the first of two point deductions. The first deduction didn't kill Salvana's hopes of a win, but a second deduction in round 9, a round he won, did essentially kill his hopes.
Given the point deductions Salvana's effort wasn't going to be enough and he lost the decision, with scores of 97-91 and 95-93, twice. Despite the spirited fight he will likely feel frustrated by the referee and by the judges. For Uehara however the win was his first for a title and sees him taking a major step forwards in regards to his career.
