Tomorrow fight fans in Osaka will have the chance to see debutant Fuko Komura [小村楓香] face off against Kaori Nagai (0-1) [長井 香織] in what is expected to be the first bout in a very interesting, exciting and promising career from Komura, who is still actually a school girl. The teenager has created a genuine buzz in boxing circles in Japan and has generated more ahead of her debut than some established fighters do in much more meaningful bouts.
Today Komura and Nagai both made weight for their bout with both coming in comfortably under the limit, at 47.5KG's, or 104.7lbs.
The weight seems to suggest that Komura's short term future lies at either Atomweight or Minimumweight though it's clear that as she matures she will likely grow into a Light Flyweight, adding to the Japanese talent in those lower weight categories. The big question however is how will she handle the pressure tomorrow with a lot of attention being given to her at what is a very young age and she's not had a big amateur career with which to build a lot of familiarity with a crowd watching her in the ring. She has however dealt with the media attention excellently so far and does seem to be a very confident young lady with the belief to go a long way.
For Nagai the weight was much lower than her debut weight, 106lbs, but she had no struggle coming in at 104.7lbs with the limit for the bout being set notably higher. The 26 year old knows the pressure isn't on her and she can just go out and do her thing, however if the bout is close we don't think the judges will be doing her any favours, then again it's a big "if" anyway.
