Earlier this year we saw Japanese fighter Ryosuke Iwasa (20-2, 12) come up short in a bout for the interim IBF Bantamweight title. Following that loss Iwasa took some time away from the ring before returning today, some 5 months following the loss.
In his comeback Iwasa took on little known Filipino foe Marlon Arcilla (8-3, 1) in what was a monster mismatch on paper, and a bout made for Iwasa to regain some confidence.
Whilst the bout was a mismatch it didn't all go as planned for IWasa, who would have been hoping to record a stoppage in his comeback fight. Instead of a stoppage however Iwasa did record a 5th round technical decision win.
In the opening round Iwasa was put under pressure from Arcilla however he did manage to limit the Filipino's success. After seeing out the early storm Iwasa managed to find a home for his left hand which helped him claim a few rounds before the bout was stopped, very early in round 5, courtesy of a cut to Arcilla's eye. The cut, caused by head clashes, forced the bout to an early conclusion and saw all 3 judges awarding the bout to Iwasa with scores of 50-46.
Whilst the win may not have been amazing for "Eagle Eye" it was a much needed return to winning ways and it now looks almost certain that Iwasa will join the ranks of the Super Bantamweight division, moving up from Bantamweight.
