In December we saw Japanese youngster Ryomei Tanaka [田中亮明] claim a gold medal at the Rio test event. This past weekend Ryomei's team held a celebration event which was attended by more than 150 guests, including WBO Minimumweight champion Kosei Tanaka (6-0, 3) [田中 恒成], Ryomei's brother.
The event also saw Ryomei celebrating the fact that he'll be put forward, unsurprisingly, to be Japan's representative at the Asian qualifiers later in the year.
That qualifying event will be held in China, in March and will be the final opportunity for Asian fighters to earn their chance to compete at the 2016 Rio Olympics. It will of course be full of talent and whilst Ryomei may be one of the favourites to qualify he certainly won't be the only man confident of earning a spot for the Rio games.
