Every so often we get a bout that looks like it promises pure action. Last night we had one such bout as the once beaten Filipino slugger Romero Duno (13-1, 12) battled the previously unbeaten Christian Gonzalez (16-1, 14). On paper it looked like two sluggers up against each other, both men having a point to prove and both seeking the WBC Youth Intercontinental Lightweight title.
The bout lived up to the expectations with both throwing bombs from the opening round. The naturally bigger "Chimpa" Gonzalez looked the bigger, stronger fighter whilst Duno appeared to be the quicker fighter, but was the one being backed up.
At the end of the action packed first round Duno showed that his speed and placement of shots was king as he dropped Gonzalez with a dynamite right hand to the chin. Gonzalezgot back to his feet, but was stumbling all over, fortunate that the round only had seconds left.
Duno's chance could have evaporated during the minute rest between rounds but the Filipino seemed confident that he was still the boss and quickly dropped a still hazy Gonzalez in round 2. This time there would be no chance for Gonzalez to continue with the referee stopping the previously unbeaten fighter who looked totally gone, despite getting back to his feet for a moment. It really was just a moment though, as he toppled back down almost instantly after the referee waved it off.
