Earlier this month we saw Filipino slugger Romero Duno (13-1, 12) claim the WBC Youth Intercontinental Lightweight title and announce himself on the international stage, stopping the touted Christian Gonzalez (16-1, 14) in 2 rounds. The bout saw Gonzlez, a hotly tipped Golden Boy Promotions prospect, suffer a really bad loss but put Duno on the proverbial boxing map.
The performance was so impressive that following the bout Gonzalez's promoter, the aforementioned Golden Boy, began talks to promote Duno and today they announced the Filipino power puncher as the newest member of their promotional stable.
The signing of the 21 year old is one that Golden Boy's head honcho Oscar De La Hoya is looking at as a long term one and it seems that some at Golden Boy feel they have an exciting prodigy on their hands, with power, speed and a style that will win fans over. Whether they have the next Manny Pacquiao is yet to be seen, but it's clear that they will use their experience to try and keep Duno away from repeating the career destruction of the once massively touted Marvin Sonsona, who looked like a star in the making before going AWOL and essentially wasting his talent.
At the moment it's unclear on when Duno will make his first outing as a Golden Boy fighter but it is very obvious that they were impress by the youngster and have big plans in store for him.
