Earlier today our friends at in charge of the aus-boxing.com twitter account, @ausboxing, revealed that there was a deal in place for Filipino Randy Petalcorin (23-1-1, 18) to defend his WBA "interim" Light Flyweight against Omari Kimweri (15-3, 6) on April 15th.
At the moment the bout does still need to be given clearance by the WBA though it does seem likely the bout will be made, with or without the WBA's clearance.
The news will be rather disappointing for those who had hoped that Petalcorin would be the April 27th opponent Ryoichi Taguchi (23-2-1, 10) [田口良一] however it's great to see the "Razor" back in the ring again. Sadly it's been too long with Petalcorin having not fought since his 1-round blitz against Ma Yi Ming last April.
For those who recognise Kimweri's name he an Australian based fighter originally from Tanzania. He is best known, in some quarters at least, for his 2013 battle with Shin Ono for the OPBF Light Flyweight title though was once lined up to fight Xiong Zhao Zhong, before the Chinese government sent him packing due to issues with his paper work.
Hopefully the winner of Petalcorin Vs Kimweri will face the winner of Taguchi's up coming bout. Sadly though it does seem like the WBA's plans to have 1 champion per weight division have now died off, or at least have quietened after some early excitement.
