On Friday Japanese legend Hozumi Hasegawa (36-5, 16) [長谷川 穂積] extended his legndary career with a shock victory to claim the WBC Super Bantamweight champion, stopping the big punching Hugo Ruiz (36-4, 32) in 9 rounds.
Immediately after the bout Hasegawa seemed unsure on his future. He admitted that the win saw him make a dream come true, by finally becoming a 3-weight champion and fulfilling a dream that he had chased for years. But he seemed at a loss as to whether or not this would be the end. Had he lost it would have been his final bout but with the win things are less clear and he won't make a decision until he's had a well earned rest.
Notably Ruiz didn't give comments to the media instead being taken to hospital due to the injury that forced his team to pull him out of the bout. Originally it seemed like a body shot, combined with exhaustion, had done the Mexican in but instead it seems that he has suffered a nasty injury to his right eye as well as a fracture to his nose, likely exacerbated during the insane exchange in round 9. We wish Ruiz a speedy recovery but, from the picture opposite, it does seem like the eye and nose were indeed badly damaged.
