On Friday Japanese fighter Kosei Tanaka (4-0, 2) paid a courtesy visit to Shizuo Yamashita, the mayor of Komaki, Aichi and announced his intention for his May 30th WBO Minimumweight world title bout with Julian Yedras (24-1, 13).
Tanaka, who is attempting to become the quickest Japanese fighter to a world title, has promised to go for the KO against Yedras who has never been stopped in his 25 fight career.
Whilst the comments he made may not come as a surprise to boxing fans it does show the confidence that the 19 year old has in his ability. It's clear that he knows how good he is and that a win by decision, whilst impressive won't be enough to make a real statement. Instead Tanaka intends to do what the brilliant Carlos Buitrago couldn't, and stop Yedras.
Notably Buitrago is the only man thus far to defeat Yedras. In that bout the Nicaraguan took a very clear decision over the then unbeaten Mexican. Although Buitrago has failed to win a world title since then he has proven his quality and fought to a draw with Merlito Sabillo as well as a controversial loss to Knockout CP Freshmart. A stoppage for Tanaka would genuinely be an outstanding method of victory.
With the bout now less than 2 weeks away it's clear that Tanaka is well under-way with his preparations for the bout. Thus far however we've not heard much about his sparring or training. Hopefully some details will emerge shortly.
