On August 31st we, as boxing fans, get a treat as WBA Super Flyweight champion Kohei Kono (32-8-1, 13) [河野 公平] faces off against Panama's Luis Concepcion (34-4, 24) in what we suspect could be a FOTY contender.
Today, ahead of that bout, Kono took part in a public training session and spoke to the media about his preparation for the bout.
Kono described Concepcion as a strong fighter with name value and it seems clear that Kono respects Concepcion, who has had a memorable career of his own coming in to this bout, as a serious challenger. Not only does he respect him but he has been scouting Concepcion daily watching videos of the Panamanian.
The champion also stated that he was looking to stop Concepcion in the second half of the fight and it seems clear that their gameplan is based on taking Concepcion in to the later rounds.
Kono looked in great condition whilst actually training and looked really sharp hitting the heavy bag and shadow boxing and he looked incredibly confident ahead of the bout, despite knowing he was in with a top class foe.
Interestingly Kono's weight is about sorted already with only 3KG's, about 6.6lbs, to lose before the weigh in a week today.
