The newly crowned WBA Super Flyweight champion Kohei Kono (30-8, 13) won the prestigious honour of "Honourable mention" in the recent WBA Fighter of the month honours.
The WBA felt that the fighter of the month award belonged to American Danny Garcia who successfully defended his WBA Light Welterweight crown against Mauricio Herrera.
Whilst we tend to feel that Garcia was lucky in his defence of the title, there was nothing lucky Kono's bout with the Japanese fighter leaving no doubt about the victor in his contest with Thai veteran Denkaosan Kaovichit.
The victory for Kono, who is now a 2-time WBA world champion, may not have been as high profile as Garcia's victory but has certainly extended his career and it seems likely that he is only a few months away from a major defence against someone like Koki Kameda or, if rumours are to be believed, Kazuto Ioka.
Well done Kono!
