Unbeaten Filipino Arthur Villanueva (27-0, 14) came into this weekend knowing he needed to impress. He had looked incredibly ordinary in his 2 previous bouts as he struggled past unheralded fighters Fernando Aguilar and Henry Maldonado and had seen a possible world title fight taken off the table as he fell down the WBO rankings, having previously been #1.
Today was "do or die" for the Filipino youngster and today he did, as he again showed how good he can be when he's on song.
Fighting against his most notable foe so far Villanueva rolled through the gears and out boxed former WBO Flyweight champion Julio Cesar Miranda (38-12-2, 29). Miranda, "Known as Pingo", had previous beaten numerous Filipino's including the likes of Richie Mepranum, who he beat for the WBO title, and Ardin Diale, who he defended the world title against. Today however Miranda struggled to land anything of note as Villanueva used his boxing skills, movement, jab and speed to keep Miranda's heavy hands at bay.
Miranda tried as much as he could but he struggled to win more than a round or two as the judges scored the bout 99-91, twice, and 98-92, all in favour of the Filipino fighter.
With this impressive showing behind him it seems that Villanueva can again think about about his world title dreams. Sadly however it seems likely he may need to wait as the Super Flyweight division, which features WBO champion Naoya Inoue, is suddenly starting to heat up in a big way.
