Yesterday in in Japan fans saw the heavy handed Keita Obara (15-1, 14) score a very easy win win over over-matched Thai visitor Khompetch Sithsaithong (5-6, 5). The bout was little more than a stay busy contest for the OPBF Light Welterweight champion though it was a chance for him to try now things that he had learned during a long training camp.
Following the win Obara took to his blog and noted that he was now aiming for a world title opportunity.
Given that Obara fights in and around the 140lb weight class it'll be difficult for him to get a shot at the top level however it's clear that he has got options. At the moment he is world ranked by 3 of the 4 world title bodies, with only the WBA not currently giving him a ranking.
The win over Khompetch won't help advance Obara's rankings but it's clear that he will now be looking at fellow ranked contenders as he progresses through the rankings and moves on wards towards a shot at the top.
At the moment it's unclear when Obara will next be in the ring but given how easily he saw off Khompetch we're expecting him to squeeze in another fight this year. Hopefully, for his sake, that comes against a world ranked fighter. We admit there isn't a lot of options regionally for him however he may target a fighter like as Adones Cabalquinto, Leonardo Zaoavigna, Czar Amonsot or Akihiro Kondo, all of whom would help him improve his ranking
