We are now just over a week away from the exciting Ioka gym card at the newly named EDION Arena Osaka. The headline bout of that card will see WBA Flyweight champion Kazuto Ioka (17-1, 10) defending his belt against Argentinian visitor Roberto Domingo Sosa (26-2-1, 14).
Today, as part of Ioka's preparations, he took part in a public training session.
The training saw Ioka shadow boxing, hitting the bags and then partaking in 4 rounds of open sparring, with two partners, one of which was former foe Pablo Carillo, each spending two rounds in the ring with Osakan star.
Ioka, who seems to be in great shape for the bout, sounded incredibly confident of not only retaining his title on September 27th but doing so with a knockout against Sosa. We'll be honest and whilst a win is expected a knockout would be very impressive for Ioka, who appears to have finally transitioned into being a full fledged, albeit naturally small, Flyweight.
If Ioka gets past Sosa here, he is then expected to move onto a rematch with Juan Carlos Reveco, who he beat for the belt earlier this year. The hope after that is to unify titles in the 112lb division, a very big ask when you consider the other divisional champions are Roman Gonzalez, Juan Francisco Estrada and Amnat Ruenroeng, 3 very talented fighters.
For those interested in watching the Ioka Vs Sosa bout it will be aired on TBS in Japan a week on Sunday alongside an IBF Minimumweight title bout between defending champion Katsunari Takayama and first time world title challenger Ryuji Hara.
