Katsunari Takayama feeling fatigued from weight loss, though goes through 10 round spar with Kinki students
Earlier today IBF Minimumweight champion Katsunari Takayama (29-7-0-1, 11) took part in a 10 round spar with students from the Kinki University boxing team.
The spar was supposed to help Takayama prepare for his upcoming bout with the once beaten Ryuji Hara (19-1, 11) and although it certainly tested his stamina it did seem to be less than perfect for the 32 year old veteran who complained of fatigue following the sessions. Although that fatigue was put down to weight loss it is an issue ahead of the fight.
Another issue that should be a concern is that Takayama was, by the end of the session, bleeding from the mouth and admitted that he wasn't at his best. The cut wasn't seen as a major issue, at least not compared to the fatigue, but it's clear that his body is, slowly breaking down. Of course when you have a style like Takayama your body does tend to age rather quickly though coming into the Hara bout the question is really whether or not he's slipped significantly from his prime.
Given that Takayama is 7 years older than Hara and has had a very tough career so far some are really doubting the "Lightning Kids" chances here and given today's issues those fans picking Hara will have become a lot more confident in what was originally perceived as an "upset".
