Earlier today the Japanese monthly boxing awards for February were announced with some pretty big name award winners.
The biggest of the names was Shingo Wake who won the Fighting Spirit award for his enjoyable, though short lived, bout with Jimmy Paypa on February 27th. Wake, defending his OPBF Super Bantamweight title for the 5th time, was put under pressure from Paypa but finished the show inside a round with a beautiful uppercut.
Another big name winner was Rikki Naito who claimed the MVP of the month following his February 9th victory over Masayuki Ito. That victory saw Naito defending his Japanese Lightweight title for the 3rd time and really prove his metal in a very competitive and highly skilled contest. Although only winning by a majority decision it was still the best win of his career and saw both guys strengthening their case for being ones to watch.
The State of the Art award was won by Yuto Shimizu following his shock stoppage win against Takehiro Shimokawara on February 7th the win for Shimizu has seen him move himself towards a title fight, though we suspect he still has further to go before getting that opportunity.
