For several weeks we have been hearing rumours that Japanese legend Hozumi Hasegawa (35-5, 15) [長谷川 穂積] would be returning to the ring to face WBC Super Bantamweight champion Hugo Ruiz (36-3, 32) on a show in Osaka that was also expected to feature WBC Bantamweight champion Shinsuke Yamanaka (25-0-2, 17) [山中慎介] .
Today that was confirmed.
The two Japanese boxing icons were both of a press conference to announce a show set for September 16th at the Edion Arena Osaka where they will be in the co-main events.
As was widely reported Hasegawa will indeed by facing Ruiz, a monstrously hard hitting Mexican who won the title earlier this yeah when he stopped Julio Ceja, and avenged one of his 3 losses. Although his two bouts with Cejas have made him a bit of a name in the US, and Europe to some extent, he's also known in Japan following a loss to Koki Kameda, who he challenged for the WBA Bantamweight title back in 2012.
For Hasegawa the bout is a second chance to become a 3-weight world champion and claim a title at Super Bantamweight, following a loss to Kiko Martinez in his previous title challenge at the weight. Unfortunately however he's been looking like a fighter beyond his best for several years and it seems that he's aware of of slide stating that this would be his last bout were he to lose.
As for the Yamanaka bout we will reporting that one in a different article as the bout deserves it's own full piece dedicated to the size of the match up.
