Earlier today we got a huge hint that Cuban boxing sensation Guillermo Rigondeaux (14-0, 9) was heading out east with serious talks about "El Chacal" fighting in Japan on News Years Eve after promotional outfit Caribe Promotions released a promotional image of Rigondeaux and Japanese fighter Hisashi Amagasa (28-4-2, 19), the current OPBF Featherweight champion.
The image is a clear suggestion that a bout between the two has been agreed for December 31st, around 6 weeks away.
From tweets on the Caribe Promotions account it seems that Rigondeaux has decided to test the water at Featherweight after having been avoided by every major fighter at Super Bantamweight. The Cuban's name has of course been a taboo word with fighters and promoters in the west and it seems that he and his team have had enough of it and will be making a conscious effort to keep their man busy even if it does involve him fighting outside of his division and even away from the cameras of HBO.
For those who haven't seen Amagasa in action he's a very gangly Featherweight who isn't the most skilled but is a tough man to fight given his freakish height, long arms and wild style. He has has was the Japanese national champion from 2011 to 2013 before winning the the OPBF title which he has now defended 3 times, all by stoppage. For those who want to see what Amagasa fights like we have managed to track down the video of his OPBF title winning bout with Ryol Lee Li which can be seen here.
This is the second bit of interesting news regarding December 31st to come out today following the report that Kazuto Ioka (15-1, 9) would be in action on the same day. We already knew the day would be a big one, following the announcement that Watanabe would be doing a world title triple header to end the year, though it appears that things are set to get even bigger. If Amagasa Vs Rigondeaux is added to the Ioka card then we could have two genuinely huge cards on the same day and a perfect way to end the year.
