One of a number of interesting post-Olympic stories was the story that Uzbek fighter Hasanboy Dusmatov, who won both a Gold medal and the Val Baker trophy, had signed professional papers with South African outfit Golden Gloves.
The story, put out by Rodney Berman, was that he had snapped up Dusmatov and would be taking him professional in South Africa to chase world titles. The only problem with that seems to be that Dusmatov hadn't actually signed a contract and actually has no immediate intention to turn professional. Instead he will be remaining amateur.
The fighter has stated that his hope is to defend his Olympic crown in 2020 at Tokyo as he looks to become one of the few 2-time Olympic gold medal winners.
At the moment Berman hasn't himself responded to Dusmatov's comments though it may that the South African is actually a victim in all this and has been scammed by someone pretending to be involved in Dusmatov's team. Alternatively it could be a case that Berman counted his eggs before actually them. Either way it's a perplexing serious of events and it's a shame that Dusmatov won't be heading to a professional ring in the near future.
