WBA Middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (29-0, 26) has, unfortunately, been ordered by the WBA to face the #2 ranked contender Jarrod Fletcher (18-1, 10).
The WBA have mandated this bout as the #1 contender Dmitry Chudinov (12-0-2, 8) will battle Patrick Nielsen (22-0, 11) for the interim title.
The WBA have have allowed the fighters and their teams 30 days, dating from May 13th, to reach an agreement or else they will be calling for purse bids.
Unfortunately this whole issue has arisen just days after reports surfaced that Golovkin was set to fight against Fletcher's compatriot Daniel Geale. That would be a great fight and the sort of top tier encounter that a fighter like Golovkin needs. A fight with Fletcher however would be a case of Golovkin going through the motions to just fulfil mandatory commitments and not the sort of thing any fan really wants to see.
We hope the WBA have a change of heart though sadly can't see it. Though there is a chance that Golovkin will be allowed to fight Geale first and then fight Fletcher later this year, possibly on a show in Monaco.
