WBA Middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (29-0, 26) may not have looked exceptional this past weekend though he did retain his world title and record his 16th straight stoppage as he stopped Osumanu Adama in 7 rounds. This victory, not his best by any stretch of the imagination, was viewed by many as a stay busy contest as he continues to be one of boxing's busiest champions.
The WBA however had different views on Golovkin and his performance awarding him the "Boxer of the Month" award for January, a huge honour for a fighter.
Whilst Golovkin got the top award it's worth noting that the "honorable mention" was shared between Luis Collazo, who stopped the returning Victor Ortiz, and Jarrod Fletcher, who out pointed Max Bursak on the same show the Golovkin/Adama bout.
Interestingly with Fletcher winning the runner up award it wouldn't be an impossibility for Golovkin to actually Fletcher at some point in the next year or so. Before then however we'd expect the Kazakh to face Fletcher's compatriot Daniel Geale, a former IBF champion.
