WBO Light Flyweight champion Donnie Nietes (33-1-4, 19) has apparently got a short list of 2 fighters for his upcoming voluntary defense on November 15th.
Originally ALA Gym were given a list of 5 fighters by Mexican promotional outfit Zanfer though those 5 fighters have been whittled down to just 2 men with Nietes being given a choice between them
One of those two men is former WBA Minimumweight title challenger Carlos Velarde (26-3-1, 14). Velarde is best known for suffering a KO of the year contender against Japan's Ryo Miyazaki back in May 2013 though has since run up a trio of wins, including a narrow victory over Jose Argumedo last time out. Although best known for his loss to Miyazaki he does hold notable wins over Jorle Estrada and Oswaldo Novoa and is a solid fighter. Sadly however Velarde is a career Minimumweight and if he was to fight Nietes he would giving away notable natural size.
The other man on the list is the 23 year old Saul Juarez (20-3, 11) who would be competing in his first world title fight. Although Juarez hasn't any previous experience of fighting in such a high profile bout he has fought some recognisable names including Martin Tecuapetla, who he is 1-1 with, Oswaldo Novoa, who he beat, Jose Argumedo, Juan Hernandez and Luis Ceja. Juarez is a natural Light Flyweight, unlike Velarde, however this would be his first fight out side of his native Mexico.
At the moment no decision has been made on which of the men Nietes will be facing though we are expecting a decision shortly as Nietes looks for his second defense of the year following an excellent stoppage victory over Moises Fuentes back in May.
