Japanese fans got a genuine treat today at the Korakuen Hall as the supporting bout to to the latest Dangan show ended up being a thriller.
The bout in question saw Cristiano Aoqui (11-4-2, 7) 青木クリスチャーノ] and Ryosuke Takami (8-2, 7) [高見 良祐], both Japanese ranked Light Welterweights, go to war in what was a thrilling encounter from the off.
The fight started at an incredible pace with both unloading shots from the opening round and although both had moments when they slowed down, that merely added to the drama with Aoki slowing in round 3, before Takami looked done for in round 4, with bad swelling around his eye. Sadly for Takami the swelling, and blood from his nose, seemed to show that Aoqui's power was taking it's toll on him physically, and whilst he did fight back hard he seemed to struggle with the physicality of the more experienced fighter.
In round 7, with Takami's eye looking a mess, Aoqui went for the finish and a barrage of unreturned shots forced the referee to save the 22 year old Takami from further harm.
With the win Aoqui may well have earned himself a Japanese title fight with Hiroki Okada. For Takami it's back to the drawing board, but it's clear that fans will be happy to see him in the ring again.
