According to sources in the Philippines it appears that Filipino promotional outfit ALA are trying to secure a rematch between 2-time world title challenger Milan Melindo (33-2, 12) and former IBF Light Flyweight champion Javier Mendoza (24-3-1, 19).
The two men fought last year, with Melindo challenging the then champion. Unfortunately for Melindo he fell to early deficit on the scorecards and was unable to over-come the difference when the bout was stopped in round 7, due to a cut ruled to Mendoza. That cut was ruled to have come from a clash of heads, and although it wasn't a major cut the ring side did feel it was worth stopping the bout for.
ALA had originally hoped to have gotten Melindo an immediate rematch however Mendoza was allowed to make a defense of his title against an opponent of his choosing. Unfortunately for Mendoza, and Melindo, that opponent was Akira Yaegashi who took Mendoza to school at the end of last year, and ripped the title from Mexican's hands. That win saw Yaegashi become a 3-weight champion, however it seems Melindo wants revenge rather than just the title and is chasing the rematch with Mendoza instead of the belt.
The aim is to get this bout made for May 28th and to have it as one of the key under-card bouts for a potential show between WBO Light Flyweight champion Donnie Nietes and Raul Garcia.
