March 4th 2016-Shimazu Arena, Kyoto, Kyoto, Japan Yu Kimura (18-2-1, 3) Vs Ganigan Lopez (26-6, 17) In 2015 Yu Kimura [木村 悠] claimed the WBC Light Flyweight title with a upset win over Pedro Guevara. In his first defense of that belt Kimura took on Mexican veteran Ganigan Lopez. Although the fight was aired on Japanese TV an actual TV version has been extremely difficult to find online, until this one became available earlier this week with many fans having only actually having seem a fan cam vesion of the fight. April 4th 2016-Shimazu Arena, Kyoto, Kyoto, Japan Yu Kimura (18-2-1, 3) Vs Ganigan Lopez (26-6, 17) This past Friday Japanese fans got the chance to see Yu Kimura [木村 悠] battle Ganigan Lopez. Coming into the bout Kimura was the reigning WBC Light Flyweight champion, and was making the first defense of his title. Note-This is the fan cam version, we will be hoping to find a TV version in the near future. November 28th-Xebio Arena, Sendai, Miyagi, Japan Yu Kimura (17-2-1, 3) Vs Pedro Guevara (26-1-1, 17) The Light Flyweight division has been one of the sports most over-looked weight classes in recent years with many fighters passing through it on their way to to bigger match ups. Although over-looked there is talent in it, with fighters like Donnie Nietes, Ryoichi Taguchi, Javier Mendoza and Jonathan Taconing being just 4 noteworthy names. Two other noteworthy names were in action this past weekend as Yu Kimura challenged WBC champion Pedro Guevara in a fantastic match up between two skilled and massively over-looked fighters. October 7th 2006-Korakuen Hall, Tokyo, Japan Yu Kimura (0-0) Vs Samkolek Chuwatana (0-3) Japanese fighter Yu Kimura is currently on the verge of a world title bout, ahead of that we've managed to hunt down his debut bout which saw him take on Thailand's Samkolek Chuwatana in a bout scheduled for 6 rounds. A loss in Japan genuinely means a lot less than a loss in the US or in the UK. In fact many of Japan's current top fighters, such as Takashi Miura and Kohei Kono have a number of losses on their record. Two of the many fighters who have shown that a loss isn't the end are Ryoichi Taguchi and Yu Kimura. The two fighters faced each other back in October 2011 in the Strongest Korakuen, the competition to decide the mandatory challenger to Japanese champion. In these case of these two men the winner was going to fight for the Japanese Light Flyweight title then held by Masayuki Kuroda. The fight saw both men entering with a loss on their record but their desire to earn a title fight was all they needed to risk a second. Whilst we won't ruin the result of this bout it's worth noting two things. Firstly both men have gone on to win the Japanese national title since this bout and as we all know Taguchi has suffered a loss to Naoya Inoue, actually giving Inoue his toughest bout to date. And secondly this bout was on the same show as Shinya Iwabuchi's contest with Shamgar Koichi. (Footage courtesy of lisencetolove) |
