October 10th 1994-Tokyo, Japan Yong Soo Choi (14-2, 10) Vs Yamato Mitani (4-0, 4) I Over the last few years we have tried to get more and more people to watch bouts featuring Korean warrior Yong Soo Choi [최용수], a regular in our Closet Classic series. One of his bouts that was long regarded as being "lost" was his first clash with former Japanese amateur stand out Yamato Mitani [三谷大和], who was then 4-0 (4) and regarded as a rising star of Japanese boxing.

In the case of the OPBF Super Featherweight title bout between Yamato Mitani and Joselito Rivera it's certainly worth watching the abridged version, even if it is mostly due to the bizarre ending to the fight, which really is something to see. January 27th 1996-Waseda University Auditorium, Tokyo, Japan Yong Soo Choi (18-2, 12) vs Yamato Mitani (7-1, 6) II In 1994 Yong Soo Choi gave Yamato Mitani his first professional loss. Choi would go on to win the WBA Super Featherweight title and give Mitani two rematches in 1996. This is the first of those rematches, and it was a fantastic war. Notably Nagashima would later challenge for the WBC title at Super Featherweight. October 13th 1996-Metropolitan Gym, Tokyo, Japan Yong Soo Choi (20-2, 13) Vs Yamato Mitani (8-2, 7) III We are well aware that Japanese fighters are thrown in deep, and that was certainly the case with former amateur stand out Yamato Mitani [三谷大和], who fought just 16 times as a professional. Mitani's career was highlighted by a vicious trilogy of bouts with Korean Yong Soo Choi [최용수], with the men twice trading blows over the WBA Super Featherweight title. Here is the third chapter in their rivalry, and amazingly it was Mitani's 4th title fight in just 11 career bouts |
