January 8th 2011- Korakuen Hall, Tokyo, Japan Tadashi Yuba (37-6-2, 28) vs Takayuki Hosokawa (17-7-3, 4) I In 2011 multi-weight Japanese champion Tadashi Yuba [湯場忠志] battled against Takayuki Hosokawa [細川貴之], who would later go on to claim Japanese and OPBF title fights. These two men would, interestingly, have a rematch more than 3 years after this bout, with that bout being for the Japanese 154lb title, this however was a non-title bout set for 8 rounds.

Japanese fighter Akio Shibata is one of the sports most over-looked fighters by those outside of his home land of Japan. Sadly for most fight fans he is better remembered for his loss to a debuting Ryota Murata than anything else he has done in the ring. Sadly that lasting memory of his loss to Murata overshadows a career which has seen him becoming a unified OPBF and Japanese champion at both Light Middleweight and Middleweight. In fact that one loss seems to over-shadow a career which has seen him score numerous solid wins over the likes of Yuki Nonaka, Daisuke Nakagawa, Yoshihisa Tonimura, Makoto Fuchigami and Takayuki Hosokawa. Sadly footage of some of those bouts is scarce though we have managed to hunt down the the full fight between Shibata and Hosokawa which, for those who haven't seen it, is here. We know we've given away the winner but the bout it's self is a clever boxing contest between two fighters who base their fight on their speed and jab. This isn't a slug fest, though there are moments, but it is a very interesting and entertaining contest as Shibata retains the Japanese Light Middleweight title. (Video courtesy of gentidori) Currently ranked #8 by the IBF at Light Welterweight Patomsuk Pathompothong is possibly the most obscure top 10 ranked fighter above Featherweight thought the Thai is a capable, though unspectacular fighter. At the moment Japan's Takayuki Hosokawa is in the top 15 IBF ranked fighters at Light Middleweight and, like Patomsuk, he's a solid but unspectacular fighter. In late 2013 the men faced off in a catchweight bout at Welterweight in an interesting contest held in Hosokawa's home city of Osaka. It was a fight between a back foot boxer and an intense pressure fighter and stylistically it was enjoyable. We won't ruin much of the details regarding the fight though we suggest that one judge, who had the bout a near shut out, needs to rewatch the contest and ask himself what he was watching. Interestingly Hosokawa has fought just once since this bout, defeating Tadashi Yuba for the Japanese Light Middleweight title, whilst the Thai has dropped back to his natural weight and recorded 5 straight victories. Equally as notable is the fact both men appear to be eyeing up possible world title bouts for 2015! (Video courtesy of yasu boxer) |
