In his first defense the Japanese fighter took on Mexican challenger Rodolfo Lopez at the Marine Messe in Fukuoka.

In 2002 the two men would rematch, this time with Koshimoto defending the OPBF Featherweight title. The multi-time world champion came to prominence following bouts with Erik Morales and Michael Brodie though continued to fight at the top tier until his retirement in 2006. One of his final bouts saw him travel to Japan to defend his title again Takashi Koshimoto. |
