Japanese Flyweight champion Suguru Muranaka is currently a world ranked fighter with his eye on winning a world title somewhere down the line. Although not the biggest puncher is a real battler and one of the most over-looked Flyweights in the sport today and in fact his title winning slugfest with Takuya Kogawa is one of the most fun to watch domestic title bouts in years. Just a few weeks ago Muranaka secured his second defense of his title as he over-came the determined Yusuke Sakashita. On paper the bout was a total mismatch but in reality it was a hard, hard fight for Muranaka against a man who came to the ring in search of an upset and gave a great account of himself...that was until Muranaka's pressure and work rate took over to grind down the game challenger who was eventually taken out by one of the best shots the champion will have ever landed. If you've not seen Muranaka before we suggest watching not only this bout but also the Kogawa fight and his first defense against Masayuki Kuroda from earlier this year. (Video courtesy of 村中優後援会)

In late 2013 Suguru Muranaka scored a break out win by defeating Takuya Kogawa in a very competitive contest to win the Japanese Flyweight title and throw his hat into the mix in boxing deepest division. In his first defense of the title Muranaka battled against former Japanese Light Flyweight champion Masayuki Kuroda. It was, on paper, a very interesting contest between a man looking to prove his quality against a man looking to become a 2-weight national champion. Although interesting on paper the bout became some what one sided as one man took more than his share of punishment and was left swollen, exhausted and eventually stopped by the referee who showed some mercy despite the bout only have around 2 minutes of the contest left. Whilst Kuroda was a Japanese champion he is probably better known by international fans for his world title bout with Juan Carlos Reveco. If you're a fan of the Flyweight division that bout is well worth a watch, especially with Reveco now scheduled to fight Yodmongkol Vor Saengthep. (Video courtesy of 村中優後援会) The Flyweight division is one of the best in boxing right now and the depth of talent is ridiculous. It's amazing that one division can be so deep. One of the many contenders lost in the depth of the division is Suguru Muranaka, the current Japanese champion is ranked by all 4 world title bodies and is viewed, by those in the know, as a genuine fringe contender if even if those outside of Japan haven't even heard of him. Muranaka's most notable fight came in December 2013 when he took on fellow contender Takuya Kogawa in a bout the Japanese national title. It was genuinely a competitive contest and a bout that helped both men enhance their standing in the sport. If you've not had the chance to see it, here you go, watch 2 of the Flyweight division's under-rated contenders in action against each other. Following this bout Kogawa would fight Yodmongkol Vor Saengthep in a WBA interim world title fight. If you've not seen that it's well worth watching to further show how good Kogawa is.
