March 31st 2008-Hua Mark Indoor Stadium, Bangkok, Thailand Somsak Sithchatchawal (56-2-1, 43) vs Poonsawat Kratingdaenggym (32-1, 22) In 2008 Thai fans got a treat as Somsak Sithchatchawal [สมศักดิ์ ศิษย์ชัชวาลย์] and Poonsawat Kratingdaenggym [พูนสวัสดิ์ กระทิงแดงยิม] clashed in a world title eliminator. By this point both men were former world champions and were fighting for a shot at the WBA Super Bantamweight title. March 18th 2006-Palais des Sport Marcel Cerdan, Levallois-Perret, Hauts-de-Seine, France Somsak Sithchatchawal (45-1-1, 35) Vs Mahyar Monshipour (28-2-2, 19) There haven't been many fights outside of North America that have been regarded by Ring and the BWAA as the "Fight of the Year", one exception is the brilliant war between Thailand's Somsak Sithchatchawal [สมศักดิ์ ศิษย์ชัชวาลย์] and French-Iranian Mahyar Monshipour [مهیار منشیپور]. The bout, at the time, seemed to suggest that the boxing was becoming more "new age" and looking outside of the US for some highlights, but sadly in the years that followed attention has gone back to the US. |
