February 28th 1971-Tochigi Prefectural Gym, Utsunomiya, Tochigi, Japan Shozo Saijo (27-6-2, 8) vs Frankie Crawford (32-10-4, 15) II In 1970 Shozo Saijo defeated Frankie Crawford in their first bout, by a razor thin majority decision, to make his 4th defense of the WBA Featherweight title. The two would rematch the next year, with Crawford looking to avenge that loss.

February 9th 1969-Nippon Budokan, Tokyo, Japan Shozo Saijo (18-5-2, 4) vs Pedro Gomez (24-1-2, 12) In 1969 the then WBA Featherweight champion Shozo Saijo faced off with Venezuelan challenger Pedro Gomez. September 27th 1968-Memorial Coliseum, Los Angeles, California, USA Shozo Saijo (16-5-2, 3) Vs Raul Rojas (35-2-1, 22) II In June 1968 Japan's Shozo Saijo defeated the then WBA Featherweight champion Raul Rojas in a none-title bout. Just a few months later the two men faced off in a rematch, this time with the title on the line. September 2nd 1971-Metropolitan Gym, Tokyo, Japan Shozo Saijo (29-6-2, 8) vs Antonio Gomez (35-2, 16) In 1971 WBA Featherweight champion Shozo Saijo faced off with Venezuelan challenger Antonio Gomez. December 3rd 1970-Nihon University Auditorium, Tokyo, Japan Hiroshi Kobayashi (59-8-4, 10) vs Shozo Saijo (27-5-2, 8) A few years ago we saw a small surge in world title bouts being fought at a catchweight. Interestingly in December 1970 we saw a catchweight bout between two world champions, with both men fighting above their championship weight. That bout saw then then WBA Super Featherweight champion Hiroshi Kobayashi take on WBA Featherweight champion Shozo Saijo in a 10 round contest above the Super Featherweight limit. Notable both men would return to their championship weight the following year, and defend their respective titles in early part of the year! September 7th 1969-Nakajima Sports Center, Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan Shozo Saijo (21-5-2, 5) vs Jose Luis Pimentel (14-2-2, 10) In September 1968 Shozo Saijo travelled to LA and upset Raul Rojas to claim the WBA Featherweight title. In his second defense, almost a year later, he took on Jose Luis Pimentel in Sapporo. February 8th 1970-Nippon Budokan, Tokyo, Japan Shozo Saijo (23-5-2, 6) vs Godfrey Stevens (68-4-3, 21) In 1968 Shozo Saijo [西城正三] created history, defeating Raul Rojas in Los Angeles to become the first Japanese champion to be crowned on foreign soil, winning the WBA Featherweight title. In his third defense of that title he took on the very experienced Godfrey Stevens. |
