August 28th 2015-Central Gym, Kobe, Hyogo, Japan Shohei Kawashima (10-0-2, 2) Vs Tatsuya Miyamoto (11-13-1, 7) In 2014 Japanese fans had the chance to see the emergence of Shohei Kawashima, who claimed the Rookie of the Year crown at Super Bantamweight. In his second bout since that win Kawashima faced the experienced Tasuya Miyamoto in an 8 round bout. (Video courtesy of Westbook Satoshi) The annual Rookie of the Year competition is one of the most interesting parts of the Japanese boxing year. We know not all the winners go on to become world champions but for many fighters this is their opportunity to make a name for themselves. The idea of making a name for themselves was certainly seen when Shohei Kawashima battled against Shisato Okuma in a very competitive bout that saw both men fighting hard in an attempt to make it to the All Japan Rookie of the Year final. We won't pretend this was a FOTY contender but it was what the Rookie of the Year bouts are all about, promise, skills and will to win and credit to both men for fighting such a competitive and even contest.
