January 29th 2016-Namuang City Hall Ground Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand Samartlek Kokietgym (23-5, 8) vs Hengky Baransano (11-9, 4) In 2014 we saw Thailand's Samartlek Kokietgym [สามารถเล็ก ก่อเกียรติยิม] challenge the then WBC Light Flyweight champion Naoya Inoue, since then the Thai has stayed busy in low profile bouts, including a recent bout with Hengky Baransano. October 9th 2015-Saigon Stadium, Mae Mor Lampang, Thailand Samartlek Kokietgym (22-5, 7) v Fanther Ndahiuw (7-4-1, 3) Last year we saw Thailand's Samartlek Kokietgym take on Naoya Inoue in a relatively unexpected world title fight. Since then Samartlek has began to rebuild and part of rebuilding process saw him take on Fanther Ndahiuw. (Video courtesy of tko.in.th) June 13th 2015- Thailand Samartlek Kokietgym (20-5, 5) Vs Fahpratan Kwanjaisrikot (0-1) Last year we saw Thailand's Samartlek Kokietgym get a surprise call to face Japanese wunderkind Naoya Inoue. Although Samartlek came up short there he has been busy since and yesterday he fought for the 5th time since that loss. In the opposite corner to the Thai was novice pro Fahpratan Kwanjaisrikot, from Laos. (Video courtesy of tko.in.th) March 28th 2015-Thailand Samartlek Kokietgym (19-5, 5) Vs Jack Amisa (20-34-2, 14) Last year Samartlek Kokietgym got a very unexpected world title shot and although he came up very short against the sensational Naoya Inoue he has since he has fought three times with the most recent of those bouts coming this past Saturday when he took on Indonesian Journeyman Jack Amisa. (Video courtesy of tko.in.th) February 28th 2015- Pattaya Boxing World, Pattaya, Thailand Samartlek Kokietgym (18-5, 5) vs Ichal Tobida (11-14, 8) Last year Samartlek Kokietgym took on the then WBC Light Flyweight world champion Naoya Inoue in a bout that saw Samartlek "survive" into the 11th round. Since that loss the Thai has been in action twice with the most recent contest coming this past weekend when he took on Ichal Tobida, a man best know for his recent losses including a stoppage defeat to Ryo Miyazaki. (Video courtesy of tko.in.th) January 31st 2015- Pattaya Boxing World, Pattaya, Thailand Samartlek Kokietgym (17-5, 5) Vs Richie Behec (2-0-1, 1) Last year we saw Thailand's Samartlek Kokietgym come up short against the then WBC Light Flyweight champion Naoya Inoue. On his return to the ring several months later Samartlek battled a different unbeaten fighter, Filipino Richie Behec, a man who was 2-0 in Thailand where he had already fought twice this year. (Video courtesy of TKO.in.th) Japanese wonder kid Naoya Inoue became the fastest Japanese champion when he stopped Adrian Hernandez. In his very next fight he became the fastest Japanese fight to defend a title as he retained his WBC Light Flyweight title and stopped Thailand's tough Samartlek Kokietgym. The bout, a mismatch from the day it was signed, was Inoue's farewell fight to the Light Flyweight division and although he was in charge it was obvious that the Japanese fighter wasn't his usual self. His defence was neglected as he attempted to entertain the fans and although he showed a lot of the brilliant offensive work that has made him fans world wide it really wasn't the showcase that he'd have been hoping for. Having struggled to make 108lbs, again, Inoue stated he was moving up to Flyweight for his next contest. We're expecting to see a more polished performance from the "Monster" next time out. (Note-fight starts at 15:00) (Video thanks to Boxers in Thailand World boxing - Boxing) In less than a week fans worldwide will know the name Samartlek Kokietgym. They may end up knowing him as the man who scored one of the biggest upsets of the year, or the man who ends up being the next victim of Naoya Inoue, though they will know his name, at least for a few days. The same couldn't be said for Samartlek just 2 fights ago when he took on Indonesian journeyman Samuel Tehuayo, aka Sammy Hagler, in their second meeting following a previous fight in February 2012. Samartlek didn't really have many problems with the Indonesian fighter who lacked the skills and power to make life difficult for the Thai though Samartlek himself didn't really impress against his limited foe in a bout that really didn't make anyone think they were watching a future world title challenger. Boxing however is a confusing sport at times and less than 3 months after this fight Samartlek gets his life changing opportunity. One really interesting thing about Tehuayo is his record. He started his career with an impressive 14-0 record though has since gone 4-24-2 with this bout being the 21st loss. Looking at the fight you can see why he loses so often now he has began fighting international opponents. In less than a week Samartlek Kokietgym will fight in the biggest contest of his life as he battles Japanese star Naoya Inoue for the WBC Light Flyweight title. With that bout arranged the Thai competed in a stay busy fight against popular and busy Indonesian journeyman Domi Nenokeba. The fight, which was never really a competitive one, really was fought as a chance for Samartlek to stay sharp and that's all he did getting a few extra rounds under his belt in the process. Interestingly Nenokeba would return to Thailand just a few weeks later and surprisingly give Saenganan KKP a very tough test, dropping Saenganan in the process. That bout may have exposed Saenganan as nothing special but will also have added to the context of this bout considering how easily Samartlek won. On the flip side of that however Samartlek didn't look like a future world champion in the making and did show numerous major flaws. |
