July 6th 2014-Akhmat Arena, Grozny, Russia Ruslan Chagaev (32-2-1, 20) vs Fres Oquendo (37-7, 24) It's rare that a bout can have an effect on the rankings around 6 years after it took place but the WBA Heavyweight title bout between Ruslan Chagaev and Fres Oquendo, which took place in Grozny, is still looming over the WBA! The bout it's self had controversy and strong political over-tones, taking place in front of Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, who got more than a little bit involved in the whole evening. June 20th 2009-Veltins Arena, Gelsenkirchen, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany Ruslan Chagaev (25-0-1, 17) vs Wladimir Klitschko (52-3, 45) When bouts fall through we rarely end up with something notable taking it's place. In the summer of 2006 however life got weird in the Heavyweight division. WBA "co-champion" Ruslan Chagaev tested positive for a form of Hepatitis, forcing him out of a scheduled May bout with Nikolay Valuev. Around the same time David Haye had to pull out of a bout with Wladimir Klitschko. We would then see Chagaev and Klitschko face off, with only Klitschko's IBF, WBO and IBO titles on the line, not Chagaev's WBA belt. This was a legitimately big Heavyweight bout, and it's often forgotten how important this was to the division at the time,. even if the way it came about was rather odd. August 27th 2011-Messehalle, Erfurt, Thüringen, Germany Ruslan Chagaev (27-1-1, 17) vs Alexander Povetkin (21-0, 15) In 2007 Uzbek Heavyweight Ruslan Chagaev clashed with the unbeaten Alexander Povetkin in a bout for the WBA Heavyweight title. Chagev, a former champion, was looking to become a 2-time champion whilst Povetkin, working with Teddy Atlas, was looking to claim his first world title. April 14th 2007-Porsche-Arena, Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg, Germany Ruslan Chagaev (22-0-1, 17) vs Nikolay Valuev (46-0, 34) In April 2007 German based Uzbek Heavyweight Ruslan Chagaev challenged the then WBA Heavyweight champion Nikolay Valuev. November 18th 2006-Burg-Waechter Castello, Düsseldorf, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany Ruslan Chagaev (21-0-1, 17) vs John Ruiz (41-6-1-1, 28) In 2006 German based Uzbek Heavyweight Ruslan Chagaev faced off with former WBA Heavyweight champion John Ruiz in a WBA world title eliminator, with the winner set for a showdown with Russian giant Nikolay Valuev. March 5th 2016-Colosseum Sport Hall, Grozny, Russia Ruslan Chagaev (34-2-1, 21) vs Lucas Browne (23-0, 20) This past weekend Heavyweight fight fans got an unexpected treat as Uzbek fighter Ruslan Chagaev took on Australian Lucas Browne, in a bout for the WBA "regular" Heavyweight title. July 11th 2015- GETEC Arena Magdeburg, Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany Ruslan Chagaev (33-2-1, 20) Vs Francesco Pianeta (31-1-1, 17) Asian Heavyweights are few and far between but the most successful, by far, is Uzbek fighter Ruslan Chagaev. The Uzbek was in action this past weekend defending his WBA "regular" Heavyweight title against German based Italian born fighter Francesco Pianeta in what turned out to be a terrible mismatch, despite the similar looking records of the two men. |
