June 22nd 2015- Boxing & Gym Academy, Moscow, Russia Ronald Pontillas (17-7-3, 8) Vs Eduard Troyanovsky (21-0, 18) Filipino fighter Ronald Pontillas has proven to be one of the most "unpredictable" fighters in Asia. The unflattering record suggests a less than talented fighter though with wins, on the road in Japan, over Masao Nakamura and Kota Tokunaga it's clear he can be a banana skin. He was looking to prove his upset ability again this past Monday when he traveled to Russia in an attempt to over-come the heavy handed Eduard Troyanovsky. October 7th 2012- KBS Hall, Kyoto, Kyoto, Japan Ronald Pontillas (14-4-3, 6) Vs Kota Tokunaga (8-1, 7) Filipino fighter Ronald Pontillas in known as "Unpredictable" and the reason for that is that he's incredibly inconsistent. One day he can look like a genuine contender whilst at other times he looks like he'd struggle to score wins on the Filipino domestic scene. The one thing Pontillas is always capable of is giving us action and that's ecatly what we got when when he took on power punching Japanese fighter Kota Tokunaga in what was an exciting though short lived tear up. In total he fought just once, battling against former OPBF Super Featherweight champion Ronald Pontillas. The bout was the Filipino's second of the year and saw him bringing in a 2 fight winning streak dating back to December last year. (Footage courtesy of Anissa) Having won the OPBF Super Featherweight title in May 2012 with a 9th round TKO over Dong Hyuk Kim it's hard to believe that Jomthong Chuwatana has only defended it twice with the most recent of those defences coming in February 2013 against former champion Ronald Pontillas. Pontillas had, himself, won the title from the heavy handed Masao Nakamura though went on to lose it to Kim, who as mentioned lost it to Jomthong. The bout, which was a relatively straight forward win on paper for Jomthong, was the hardest bout of his career so far and saw him forced to take some solid shots from his Filipino foe. Despite the bout being relatively tough for Jomthong it was still a very good 12 round work out for the tough and talented Thai who is now set to return to the ring to take on Koseki Nakama. It's just a shame the OPBF title has been held up for way more than a year. Many fighters in boxing fight with the mentality of "stop or be stopped". It's great fun to watch but it can back fire horribly on a fighter who makes a mistake whilst hunting a stoppage. One such case of that mentality back firing was seen on May 7th 2011 when Masao Nakamura, then 12-0 (12) took on Ronald Pontillas in a defence of the OPBF Super Featherweight title. Up to this point Nakamura had been Nakamura has been taking names, kicking ass and picking up cheques in double quick time. His 12 wins going in to this bout had taken him just 29 combined rounds. He was, in some corners, the Japanese Edwin Valero. When he hit stayed him. That changed slight when took on Filipino fight Pontillas and was dropped within the first minute. Pontillas, smelling blood, went back on the offensive and quickly knocked out Nakamura in stunning upset that showed how good Pontillas can be when he's on song. Sadly for Pontillas his reign as OPBF champion came to an end in just his second defence and since then he has lived up to his nickname of "Unpredictable" with no real consistency to his results. Since this loss Nakamura has rebuilt his career excellently with 6 successive stoppages and their is talk about him getting a world title fight with WBA champion Takashi Uchiyama sooner rather than later.
