December 31th 2016- Shimazu Arena Kyoto, Kyoto, Japan Shohei Omori (17-1, 12) vs Rocky Fuentes (35-8-2, 20) Earlier today Japanese Southpaw Shohei Omori [大森 将平] took on Filipino veteran Rocky Fuentes, in a stay busy fight as Omori continued to pursue a world title bout, which is now expected to take place in 2018. December 18th 2012-Korakuen Hall, Tokyo, Japan Rocky Fuentes (31-6-2, 19) vs Yuki Nasu (23-6, 16) In December 2012 the then OPBF Flyweight champion Rocky Fuentes travelled to Japan to defend his title against Japanese challenger Yuki Nasu. When we talk about the best fighter in the world it's hard to avoid the name of Roman Gonzalez who continually proves to be one of the most impressive offense fighters. He showed his power, aggression, pressure and destructiveness again recently as he defeated Filipino tough guy Rocky Fuentes in a bout that should have been tough but was made to like very easy by the Nicaraguan. Whilst the performance and result were both very impressive it needs to to be noted that this contest came just weeks after Gonzalez's win over Akira Yaegashi in September. After the fight fight Gonzalez said he was willign to fight with either Kazuto Ioka or Naoya Inoue two other fights that would be genuinely great and both of which would likely see Gonzalez returning to Japan where he is clearly very popular. In less than a week's time we will see Rocky Fuentes battle against Roman Gonzalez in a WBC Flyweight world title bout, for Fuentes it will be his second world title bout though he's a very experienced fighter and he carved out a sensational run as the OPBF Flyweight champion between 2010 and 2013. As the Oriental champion Fuentes made an impressive 6 defenses of the title. The 5th of those defenses saw Fuentes battle against Japanese challenger Myung Ho Lee in what was a compelling bout on paper between a brilliant champion and a very promising challenger, who had won 15 of his 16 prior bouts. In the ring it proved to be just as good as it looked on paper as both men had their moments and both had to take some solid shots in what was very solid OPBF level fight and an enjoyable contest to watch. (Video courtesy of the fantastic Jerome Naldoza) At the beginning of this year it was only the hardcore and the Thai fans who knew the name "Amnat Ruenroeng". By the end of the year however almost every actual fan of the sport will know it after he became the IBF Flyweight champion and made defenses against both Kazuto Ioka, a split decision win in Japan, and McWilliams Arroyo, a very close decision in Thailand. Whilst it's those defenses that have allowed Amnat to have his name mentioned in the Fighter of the Year conversations it does need to be noted that another stand out win was his title win, a very hard fought decision over Filipino road warrior Rocky Fuentes, another very good win on paper. What's worth not particularly about this contest was that Amnat didn't cope well with the pressure in a number of middle rounds though showed his talent late to pull it out of the bag. It's also worth nothing that Fuentes will be challenging Roman Gonzalez later this year in what will give us a chance to compare Ruenroeng to Gonzalez. Sadly we suspect that could be another loss for the under-rated Fuentes. |
