April 16th 1960-Lumpinee Boxing Stadium, Bangkok, Thailand Pone Kingpetch (19-3, 6) vs Pascual Perez (54-1-1, 38) I In 1960 Thailand's Pone Kingpetch [โผน กิ่งเพชร] challenged world Flyweight champion Pascual Perez in what turned out to be a legendary day for Thai boxing. Note - this isn't the full fight, but is as close as we've found and is such an important part of Thai boxing history that we felt it needed to be included here. October 10th 1962-Kokugikan, Tokyo, Japan Fighting Harada (26-1, 10) vs Pone Kingpetch (25-3, 8) I In 1962 fans in the East saw legends colliding as Japan's Fighting Harada [ファイティング原田], then 19, challenged WBA Flyweight champion Pone Kingpetch [โผน กิ่งเพชร], the first Thai world champion. These two would rematch just 3 months later. January 23rd 1964-Rajadamnern Stadium, Bangkok, Thailand Hiroyuki Ebihara (38-1-1, 22) Vs Pone Kingpetch (26-5, 8) II In 1963 Japan's Hiroyuki Ebihara [海老原 博幸] scored an opening round KO against Thailand's Pone Kingpetch [โผน กิ่งเพชร] to dethrone the Thai of the WBA and WBC Flyweight titles. The following year the two men rematched with Ebihara travelling to Thailand for the contest. September 18th 1963-Metropolitan Gym, Tokyo, Japan Hiroyuki Ebihara (36-1-1, 20) Vs Pone Kingpetch (26-4, 8) Back in 1963 fans in Asia saw two of the great Flyweights face off for the first of two meetings. The bout saw the then unified Flyweight champion Pone Kingpetch [โผน กิ่งเพชร], the first Thai world champion, battle against the then unheralded Hiroyuki Ebihara [海老原 博幸], one of the genuine legends of Japanese boxing. The two men would later fight a second time, just 4 months later. |
