May 28th 2015- Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand Nawaphon Por Chokchai (27-0, 20) Vs Chatpetch Sithsaithong* (?-?) Thailand's Nawaphon Por Chokchai has been on the verge of a Flyweight world title fight for a while. Unfortunately his wait does appear to have been dragged out and as a result he has been facing some very limited foes, including Chatpetch Sithsaithong who he took on at the end of May. (Video courtesy of tko.in.th) April 28th-Thailand Nawaphon Por Chokchai (26-0, 19) Vs Dion Arema (3-3, 2) Thailand's Nawaphon Por Chokchai has been one of the few fighters actively chasing a fight with Roman Gonzalez though unfortunately he's been made to wait for the shot at Chocolatito. Due to that wait Nawaphon has been staying busy and recently took on Indonesian foe Dion Arema in a bout just to keep the rust off. (Video courtesy of tko.in.th) February 24th 2015- Municipality of Klong 6, Klongluang District, Pathum Thani, Thailand Nawaphon Por Chokchai (25-0, 18) Vs Powell Balaba (8-12-1, 5) Thailand's Nawaphon Por Chokchai is heading towards a Flyweight world title bout at some point in the near future. To stay active he has continued to fight in bouts that are effectively stay busy contests with the most recent of those coming against Filipino journeyman Powell Balaba. On paper this was a mismatch though it seems like Nawaphon was using it to get used to a southpaw opponent more than anything else. As a result it was a less than inspiring bout. (Video courtesy of tko.in.th) World ranked Thai Flyweight Nawaphon Por Chokchai recently recently took on gutsy Filipino Mateo Handig and continued his winning streak not necessarily as a result of his ability but sheer size and strength, walking through the shots of Handig before breaking down the Filipino to defend his WBC Asian Boxing Council Flyweight title. Despite the win questions remain about how Nawaphon makes Flyweight and about how his ability will hold up against top divisional fighters. On this performance we would suggest he would struggle against the top guys in his division though at 25-0 he has certainly done well for himself so far. (Video courtesy of ทีเคโอ มวยโลก) Some fights lights look interesting on paper but turn out one-sided. One such fight was the recent contest between Nawaphon Sor Rungvisai, or Nawaphon Por Chokchai, and Donny Mabaao. Mabao, a usually tough, durable Filipino journeyman is rarely stopped and in his fight with Ryuji Hara he gave the unbeaten Japanese fighter genuine fights. Against Nawaphon however things were very different and the Filipino never really got into the fight. One major thing worth noting here is that this was a regional Flyweight title bout and we know Nawaphon is struggling with 112lbs, we do wonder what the weight difference actually was here... (Video courtesy of ทีเคโอ มวยโลก) If you recognise the name Nawaphon Sor Rungvisai you may know two things about him. Firstly the Thai was #1 in the recent WBC rankings at Flyweight, we'll admit we're not sure, and secondly he is the younger brother of Suriyan Sor Rungvisai, who will be fighting Shinsuke Yamanaka later this year in a WBC Bantamweight world title fight. Although highly ranked at Flyweight it's unlikely Nawaphon will ever fight for a title there and in his 23rd pro bout he seemed to accept that his body was out growing the 112lb limit he fought closer to the Super Flyweight limit. In that bout he took on Indonesia's Hendrik Barongsay and although the bout wasn't the most technically correct fight of recent years we did get plenty of entertainment from both men who decided to have a relatively fun to watch fight. We won't ruin what happens, though we will admit that we really have to question the WBC ranking committee for having Nawaphon #1 in the toughest division in the sport.
