Over the last few years the Minimumweight division has given us more than it's share of fantastic bouts. It gave us a fighter of the year contender in 2011 when Akira Yaegashi took on Pornsawan Porpramook, the following year we have Yaegashi fighting Kazuto Ioka and this year we've Katsunari Takayama fighting against Francisco Rodriguez Jr. Last year it was a WBO world title bout between Merlito Sabillo, the defending champion, and Carlos Buitrago that arguably stole the headlines for the division. It wasn't a FOTY contender but it was still a very good bout and thoroughly entertaining through out with both men needing to show their metal in the contest. The fight really put Buitrago, the challenger from Nicaragua, on the boxing map and we will see him again return Asia in just a few weeks when he battles unbeaten Thai Knockout CP Freshmart. We know Knockout's team will be studying this fight very carefully. (Video courtesy of Sweetboxing/Ryan Bivins) At the end of 2013 all 4 major titles at Minimumweight were held by Asian fighters. The WBA belt was with Ryo Miyazaki, the WBC belt was with Xiong Zhao Zhong, the IBF belt was with Katsunari Takayama and the WBO title was with Merlito Sabillo. Since then however things have changed, a lot. Miyazaki lost his WBA belt when he could not longer make 105lbs and then suffered a shock loss at 108lbs to Fahlan Sakkreerin Jr, Zhong was battered and beaten by Oswaldo Novoa and Sabillo lost his title to Francisco Rodriguez Jr, a relative unknown prior to his win over Sabillo. Sabillo was attempting to defend his belt for the second time. It was supposedly a cherry pick of a defence against a young Mexican fighter who had lost against his only notable foe, Roman Gonzalez. What happened instead however was a beat down by Rodriguez Jr who dominated Sabillo with relative ease dropping him in round 2 and stopping him in round 10. The opening round saw Rodriguez looking like the bigger, stronger man and although Sabillo wasn't there to lose he simply couldn't match the Mexican who applied constant pressure and brought the fight to the Filipino with vicious body shots all taking their toll on the out gunned champion. This bout is of note for two reasons. Not only did it see a Filipino losing a world title but Rodriguez will be fighting Takayama in an IBF/WBO unification bout in just a few days time. That bout is the biggest in recent memory for the Minimumweight division and this footage proves just how dangerous Rodriguez is, something Takayama will have to be fully aware off going into their fight on August 9th.
