In his second defense he took on the then unknown Malcolm Tunacao, who was looking to avenge Pacquiao's defeat and reclaim the title for the Philippines.

February 5th 2006-International Conference Hall, Nagoya, Aichi, Japan Malcolm Tunacao (19-1-2, 13) vs Kohei Oba (13-0, 8) In 2005 Filipino fighter Malcolm Tuancao claimed the OPBF Bantamweight title. In his first defence he faced off against the then unbeaten Kohei Oba [大場浩平], in the first of two bouts between the two men.
